New ID & alert sheets released for the Asian hornet and the invasive garden ant

The GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS) is very interested in two species of invasive non-native insect, the Asian hornet Vespa velutina and the invasive garden ant Lasius neglectus.  For both species they are keen to enlist the help of pest controllers to be vigilant and report any suspect sightings – in particular for the Asian hornet.

Asian hornet
For the Asian hornet the NNSS need to detect them rapidly and they are keen for pest controllers who have any suspect sightings to report them to the NNSS straight away. The alert email address is: alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk They will require the location (and photo if possible).  A free recording App is currently being developed, which they hope will be available shortly.

An ID sheet and Alert Poster has been developed and are available here.

Invasive garden ant
The GB Non-Native Species Secretariat are also keen to get any records pest controllers may have of this species – particularly where persistent infestations have been sighted of small dark ants indoors during the winter.

York University is studying this species and would greatly appreciate any reports.  Contact details are – Phillip Buckham-Bonnet: pbb502@york.ac.uk  and ideally Phillip will need a voucher specimen.
